What is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act was primarily designed to:
- Improve portability and continuity of health insurance coverage to ensure that people are able to obtain and maintain their health insurance if they change jobs (certificates of credible coverage).
- Provide security and privacy of protected health information (PHI).
- Combat waste, fraud and abuse in the health insurance and health care delivery.
